The London Local
Celebrating grassroots football and the local communities (...and pubs) that make it happen.
THE IDEA
After more than three years designing custom kits for grassroots clubs across the UK - from shirts full of interlocking cowboy boots to a kit made from Milhouse’s face - we decided it was time to organise some football of our own. Thanks to all of you, we have a pretty good idea of what makes casual football so great, so we’ve put them all together into our first event in London: The Icarus London Local.
On 3rd August, we’ll gather 8 mixed teams at Haggerston School for a day of laid-back 7-a-side and even more laid-back everything else. There’ll be cans on the sidelines, injured mates deputising as refs, and a party at The Nelson’s Pub after. But there’s a twist.
As custom kit designers, we’re used to throwing in little meaningful details about your team into your kits. So, we figured we’d take on the design challenge of doing that for the places around our office in East London, then having people sign up to play for the team that means the most to them. And in our utopic version of grassroots football, every local team gets the dopamine hit of knowing there’s a nearby pub cheering you on - hence ‘The London Local’.
THE TEAMS
So, the event will have 8 teams (shown below), all of which have a kit that’s designed in the image of their local area and their proud local pub sponsor. In other words, by signing up, you get your hands on a limited edition, embroidered shirt based on your favorite area of London, to show off at the local pub, post office or other community hub.
Eagle eyed community members will find famous (and not that famous) landmarks, pub decor, and nods to their area’s culture and history, all within one football shirt. We'll be revealing those in the lead up to the big event.
In creating a lineup of new London teams, it was important to us that we got a proper local pub sponsor on board, to put their stamp on the shirt and to get locals involved in the team. So, we took on the arduous task of going from door to door around London, sneaking pints during the work day and finding the perfect pub partners for each team:
Soon, you’ll see London Local sign up sheets in all of these fine establishments, and they might even run a little mixer for their teams ahead of the tournament on August 3!
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
This event is open to players of any ability and gender identity, so everyone’s welcome!
Below there’s a form where individual players can sign up to play a part in the Icarus London Local! Securing your place is £50, and that gets you a premium quality shirt (to keep…forever), entry to the tournament, and a place in the private event when the football wraps up. Don’t worry: rest assured, we are losing money on this tournament.
You can sign up for whichever team you feel most affinity to, whether you live there, work there, or just spend a lot of nights out there. We’ve started with the area near our office for now (i.e. North/East), so we’re sure there’ll be a lot of sought-after Southern and Western London ballers in the free agents pool.
BEFORE YOU ENTER...
Before signing up, we’d like to stress that this event is intended to be a fun, laid back day of pretty non-competitive football. In our experience, casual football is fun for many reasons, none of which are getting wound up because your teammates aren’t playing well or going studs up into someone who’s only there because his work team was short a player.
If you disagree, with respect, your services are probably needed in far higher level matches than the ‘Icarus London Local’. The English football pyramid needs you.
