And since then, we've been lucky enough to see the full breadth of what grassroots football can be. Whether they're aiming for amateur titles or use football as an excuse to go to the pub together, we think these clubs provide community in an even more important way than a lot of their professional counterparts. We don't pick favorites, but here are some highlights from our wide community of grassroots clubs.
Hells Bells were founded in 2021 to provide an inclusive space for women, trans people and GNC folk of all abilities to play football in London. They even founded a league, Clubs United, to unite teams with the same mission, and to cap it off, they round out the year with drag karaoke at a gay pub, giving old-fashioned football men yet another reason to seethe.
Hells Bells came to us asking for an eye-catching shirt that would be unmistakably theirs, while presenting a vision of hell that was more playful than gothic. With a sponsor as unique as Queer Gin, we had to make sure to give that all-caps QUEER breathe, too. Runner up in last year's Icarus Kit of the Year!
Zilker FC, named after their city's famed park and founded with the mission of bringing British Sunday League fervor to Austin, might be a hard-nosed Sean Dyche side on the pitch, but they're far from conservative off it.
Drawing on the oft-combined inspirations of Texan flowers and the poetic football of 2010s Burnley, Zilker's "Bluebonnet kit" has become a fan favorite far beyond Austin city limits, winning last year's coveted Icarus Kit of the Year. We'll take some credit, but particular praise should go to local indie band Foam Star, who delivered one of our favorite-ever shirt sponsors. Up the Zilk.
For last year’s TST, we designed three kits for Toronto Athletic, who hosted a traveling Icarus All-Stars team in their own Sports Leagues Canada tournament earlier that summer (we did not win). We're particularly proud of the 'home' jersey, which added a not-often-seen edge to the symbolic Canadian maple leaf.
The Canadians had come within a game of the grand prize in TST 2023, so we knew we were in for a wild one. They didn’t disappoint, making history in the knockout stages with a 5-goal comeback - the biggest remontada in TST history.
Pints. Pickup. Podcasts. The recipe to Garden Parties' success might sound simple, but the football community they've built in Philly is far greater than the sum of its parts. Close friends of the Icarus office and Philly's best dive bars, GPFC win titles on the pitch and host the best celebrations off it.
For their latest kit, we kept things simple and focused on construction and color blocking to deliver a classic kit that evokes the retro Football League years the Garden Parties folk liked chatting about on their podcast. Hidden away in the hooped design is an alternative GPFC wordmark, while front and centre is team local (and Icarus Cup party hosts) The Black Sheep.
In the heart of the Alps, Davide Corsini built the perfect side to take on Trento’s premier amateur tournament. Their secret weapon? Building the club’s core from a collection of Corsini siblings, cousins and in-laws.
With family at its heart, Tridentum City FC could make something distinctly their own, and we were more than happy to help. The team's name is a reference to the Ancient Roman settlement that became Trento, while the logo features a stylised Poseidon, a common symbol of the city. With influences like Venezia FC and the surrounding mountains in mind, we’re glad that we could give them something the team - and the Corsini family - could be proud of.
Spindles United was founded by a group of college students from Cohoes, NY to give the city affordable soccer with a strong sense of club identity that the community can buy into. Spindles is run like a professional one, runs community-wide events and training sessions, takes active steps to reduce their carbon footprint, and ensures 95% of its sponsors and partners are local businesses.
They came to Icarus because they wanted a clean, classic design that was bold enough to stand out, but simple enough to let their team logo and sponsors - in other words, their community - do the work. An exemplary Icarus club.
Shepherd's Booters formed in late 2021 to address the lack of casual football options for women's and non-binary players in West London, and since then they've grown to become one of the city's most creative and interesting teams. Whether they're partnering with London's coolest record shop/bar or crafting one of the best kit release videos in Icarus history, they always do it the Booters way.
They wanted their Icarus kit to be a love letter to West London and their home pitch, Wormwood Scrubs. So, we turned the topography of the park into a wavy kit design, while giving the club a full color makeover from black and white to pastel blue. To round it off we designed a fresh club logo and added the brilliant Next Door Records logo. Putting the club (literally) on the map.
