This Memorial Day Weekend, Icarus and CASA hosted the 2nd edition of Icarus Cup: Austin at the city's Onion Creek Soccer Complex, with a record 40 teams (each complete with unique Icarus kits) turning out for a weekend celebrating grassroots football, kit design, and the Icarus community in Texas.
The Icarus design team pulled up their 'Keep Austin weird' moodboard and created 40 tournament-specific designs drawing on Texas culture, from rodeo clowns to Willie Nelson.
We didn’t want to keep these great designs hidden away in Austin, so we’ve made each and every Icarus Cup Austin jersey available for preorder here!
Throughout our five divisions - Open D1/D2, Mixto D1/D2 and Over-30s - we saw it all: great sportsmanship, audacious bicycle kick attempts, and more than a few sneaky sideline Shiners. Congratulations to all our winners: Vanta (Open D1), My Ball Zach Ertz (Mixto D1), Austin Express (Over 30s), CD Nopaleros (Open D2), and Happy Hour Coed (Mixto D2)!
Unsurprisingly, for many, the on-field displays played second fiddle to the weekend's off the pitch festivities. The event kicked off with opening ceremonies at the soccer complex, with beers from Shiner, 3v3 soccer with Vanta, and music by Austin party stalwarts Secret Disco Society.
On Saturday, teams that were between games (or disgruntled substitutes leaving their post) could head to Pinthouse Brewing for a Champions League watch party. That evening, teams were taken on a bar crawl of cult East Side bars like Low Down Lounge and Violet Crown Social Club before the headline act: an EP release party at Shangri-La with local indie act Foam Star, who have the unique distinction of being the sponsor of last year's fan-voted Icarus Kit of the Year, Austin's own Zilker FC.
Call it a community, call it a cult, but we like to keep it in the Icarus family whenever we can!
See you next year, Austin.
