About The Aztecs

The Aztecs built their reputation on relentless intensity and a generation of home-grown warriors willing to put their bodies on the line for victory.

However, changes in ownership have brought with them more signings from Europe, sparking fierce debates about the dilution of the club’s traditional identity. 

Some fans have welcomed the Spanish influence, arguing that the influx of new technology and a new philosophy is necessary to sustain their success. Others take to the stands to level accusations of ‘malinchismo’, a rallying cry used to describe their gradual loss of its ‘jaguar spirit’.

Although the Spanish faction in the lineup is growing, traditionalists are emboldened by hometown hero Cuahetemoc still leading the team out every match. Results remain competitive, despite the visible friction between the swashbuckling Aztecs and conservative Spaniards on the pitch.

As the season unfolds, the question hanging over Tenochtitlan is no longer whether the Aztecs can win - but whether they can remain recognisably themselves while doing so.
